Josiah Akin came to Indiana from Virginia in 1792 with his father, who was also named Josiah. He served as a major in the militia of the Indiana Territory. He lived in or around New Albany for most of his life. H.C. Ritchie, whose name appears in the collection, was Akin's grandson. From the description of Papers, 1803-1912.
